Russell Crowe has apologised for his Twitter tirade against circumcision when he called the practice “barbaric and stupid.”
“Circumcision is barbaric and stupid. Who are you to correct nature? Is it real that GOD requires a donation of foreskin? Babies are perfect,” Crowe wrote on Thursday, questioning the Old Testament mandate for the practice on Jewish males.
Crowe’s comments were part of an on-line conversation with his friend, Inglourious Basterds actor Eli Roth – who is Jewish – but the statement quickly ignited a firestorm, with media outlets reporting the comments as possibly anti-Semitic.
The Oscar-winner promptly deleted the message and apologised.
“I have a deep and abiding love for all people of all nationalities, I’m very sorry that I have stated things on here that have caused distress,” the New Zealand native wrote to his Twitter followers.
“My personal beliefs aside I realize that some will interpret this debate as me mocking the rituals and traditions of others. I am very sorry,” the 47-year-old added.
Roth spoke out about the controversy, saying the anti-Semitic claim was out of line.
“I am deeply, deeply disturbed at the media’s portrayal of Russell Crowe as an anti-Semite for making a joke to me on Twitter,” Roth stated in a statement.
“Russell and I are great friends, and often tease each other publicly, as you can see from my response … Not one person from any media outlet contacted me to ask if it was a joke or not before running their vicious stories, which is indicative of a much more serious problem,” he added.
