JAKE Gyllenhaal has teamed up with British adventure guru Bear Grylls for a survival expedition in the Icelandic wilderness, Us magazine reports.

Hollywood heartthrob Gyllenhaal put his outdoor adventure skills to the test over two days for an episode of hit show Man vs Wild  in a landscape dominated by large glaciers and some of Europe’s most active volcanoes.

Grylls stated his famous companion had come up trumps in the tough conditions.

“The wild is always very revealing – not only physically but mentally,” he said. “You’ve got to smile when it’s driving horizontal hail and be able to face your fears and just get on and do it – and on both of those accounts, Jake came up strong.”

“For me, it’s all about discovery,” Gyllenhaal said.

It is not the first time Grylls has been joined by a Hollywood star. In a special first aired on June 2, 2009, funnyman Will Ferrell somehow survived a trip to a rugged area of northern Sweden.

Grylls is famed for pushing himself to the limit in extreme conditions, including crossing the icy Atlantic in an inflatable boat, flying a powered paraglider above Mount Everest, sleeping inside a camel carcass and eating yak eyeballs whilst in Siberia.
