TV review: World Snooker Championship Final; Britain Beware; The King & the Playwright: A Jacobean History

Five kids meet horrible ends on a farm – you have got to laugh There were several years during the early 1980s when I’d give over every May Day bank holiday to watching the concluding frames of the World Snooker Championship Final (BBC2) on TV. There are a few million viewers who still do and I anticipate Ronnie O’Sullivan and Ali Carter gave them plenty of excitement, but somehow, a long time ago, the hypnotic effect of watching young men with a pallor that suggested they had yet to encounter daylight repetitively potting the same balls for hours – make ...

TV review: Land of the Lost Wolves; Natural World: The Real Jungle Book Bear

Two alpha males howl for a lone female of the species – but these are humans, not wolves It’s wolves v bears today. Not an actual fight, though that would have been good. Who would win? Depends on what kind of bear, I suppose. A grizzly surely would take out a wolf; but if it was a tiny spectacled bear from deepest darkest Peru, my money’s on the wolf. Bye-bye, Paddington. If it was Wolves, as in Wolverhampton Wanders, then obviously you’d have to go for whatever they were up against – spectacled bears, teddy bears, Stoke City, anything.

TV review: Natural World: Queen of the Savannah – The Honeybee

Despite sibling rivalry and murder, this tale of bees is just not buzzy enough In a harsh landscape of barren plains, twisted forests, mighty peaks and soaring eagles, two beautiful princesses are born. Twin sisters, one of whom will become queen and reign supreme. She will command an army of devoted soldiers who will unleash terror across the land. They will take on enormous fire-wielding foes in order to defend their queen and her precious hoard of liquid gold. The other princess will die.

‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’: Linkin Park Performs Free Show for Moscow Premiere (Video)

Linkin Park at “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” premiere in Moscow. MOSCOW – The US alternative band Linkin Park played an outdoor show in Moscow, near Red Square, on Thursday in support of the world premiere of Transformers: Dark of the Moon. The entrance to the show was free, but only to those who won tickets through the FM station Energy and men’s magazine Maxim, which has helped to keep attendance to figures acceptable in the city’s historic center. “Linkin Park have always been large Transformers fans,” the movie’s director Michael Bay states in a news conference a few hours ...

Your next box set – The Nicolas Philibert Collection

The passion and humour of Philibert’s documentary films gently restore your faith in the world Fans of great documentaries owe a large debt to the French TV station Canal+. For it was they who bankrolled the career of Nicolas Philibert, chronicler of everything from tortoises to instructors to taxidermists, some of whose back catalogue can now be enjoyed in the comfort of your own home. Philibert came to public attention this side of the channel nine years ago, after winning an Oscar nomination for Être et Avoir, about a instructor in an Auvergne school managing to stay calm while wrangling a ...

Eminem’s latest: EW review

Below, find an expanded version of the review out this Friday in EW’s print edition: Recovery saw Eminem finding the more dynamic moments hidden between his blasts of bluster. Sure, there was still an awful lot of shouting, but even full-throated rage-athons like “Cold Wind Blows” granted a lot more Marshall Mathers to show off his full skill set while Slim Shady was catching his breath. It was a revelation that lead to the ideal work of his career. The pair spew acid-tongued battle raps that shout down celebrities (Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber join the hit list) with obsessive ...

John Peel’s Festive 50 signals a changing world

December 1977: Number 14 in our series of the 50 key events in the history of indie music If one had to nominate a single individual who nurtured and promoted independent music, that person would surely be John Peel. In his late-night Radio 1 slot, the lugubrious DJ would play records by bands who had nothing in them other than a single barbaric yawp; he would provide the first stepping stone for groups who would later achieve greatness; he would offer acts of nearly any stripe the chance to showcase their talents in the four-song recordings from the BBC studios ...

Paramore Releases ‘Monster’ Single From ‘Transformers’ Soundtrack

NEW YORK — Tennessee alt-rockers Paramore premiered “Monster,” their first single as a trio since the departure of Zac and Josh Farro late last year, on their website Friday. The track, set to hit iTunes June 7, is the first single off the Transformers: Dark of the Moon soundtrack. With dissonant, eerie guitar strumming setting the mood, singer Hayley Williams croons seductively before guitars come bursting through the door with a metalic crunch. From then on Williams lets loose, belting “I’ll stop the whole world / From turning into a monster,” and “Now that you are gone, the world is ...

Scotty McCreery single: It’s good!

Image Credit: Michael Becker/FOX American Idol winner Scotty McCreery nearly certainly wouldn’t have become as large as he is going to get (and you can count on this guy being huge, perhaps challenging Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood for Idol-alum dominance) had he not gotten on television—mostly because you need the juxtaposition of his baby face with the rich, nuanced, weathered baritone that comes out of it.

Unreported World – review

An investigation teetering on the brink of despair focused on the Mexican woman with the hardest job in journalism In Unreported World (C4), Evan Williams talked to journalists who risk their lives every day, not as war correspondents, but as ordinary beat reporters in their own home town. Mind you, Ciudad Juárez in Mexico is basically a war zone, with statistics to rival any other. More than 3,000 people were murdered there last year. While two rival drug gangs – the Juárez and Sinaloa cartels – fight to dominate the lucrative supply routes to the US, whole areas of the city have been abandoned; 400,000 people out of ...
