From the archive, 28 February 1985: Doctor Who fans upset as BBC postpones new series

Originally published in the Guardian on 28 February 1985 The controller of BBC 1, Mr Michael Grade, may well be longing by this morning to step into the Tardis and whisk himself beyond the range of the outcry stirred up by his decision yesterday to postpone the next series of Dr Who. Work on the new series, originally scheduled for January next year and starring Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant, was due to begin in a month’s time. But Mr Grade has decided that the money would be better spent on other drama projects and that the Doctor must be ...

TV matters: festive fixtures

Jools’s Annual Hootenanny is the nearest thing we have this day to an annual favourite such as Morecambe & Wise Allowing for changes of faces and shows, the British TV Christmas remains remarkably unchanged from the 1960s. Indeed, reruns of Morecambe & Wise achieve the peculiar cryogenic spectacle of the duo still dominating the festive schedules, even though they last performed together 27 years ago. However, the TV new year is as directionless as a midnight drunk stumbling home. Confident and consistent about what 25 December should see, executives have constantly revised their vision of 31 December.

2011 showed us new ways of seeing

The sense of new images hitting our eyes from everywhere is one of the most remarkable aspects of 2011 Reasons to be cheerful in 2011? Let’s see. It was a year when eyes opened a bit wider, when images from Earth and space and the enigmatic microverse of quantum physics expanded our field of vision – and the spread of new means of communication made those images more accessible and shareable than ever before. David Attenborough showed us what life is like under the surface of the Arctic’s frozen sea.

Music Review: Red River Blue

Where did all the good ole boys go? Blake Shelton asks that question on Red River Blue, but maybe he should answer it himself. Over the past year, the rebel-flag-flyin’, moonshine-spittin’, yee-haw-shoutin’ Okie from 2010′s Hillbilly Bone and All About Tonight has settled down, with a steady job judging NBC’s The Voice and a marriage to fellow crooner Miranda Lambert. Newly nesting and fresh from his pop-crossover hit ”Honey Bee,” he is lost some rascal magnetism, but he is winning sweetness points, harmonizing with the missus on the title track, offering to make dip for her ”tater chips,” and insisting, ...

Beyonce: ’1 + 1′ in N.Y. Central Park

The high of selling millions of albums, headlining a big tour, and basically being a worldwide ambassador of girl power requires a major force to come down from. Last year, it took an ocean’s waves to wash away Beyoncé’s larger-than-life modify ego, Sasha Fierce. “The ocean makes me feel really small,” she states at the top of her MTV special Beyoncé: Year of 4–which aired last night.

Michael Jackson’s Money: How Much He’s Made After Death

Michael Jackson may have died in 2009, but his once-suffering estate is now thriving on profits from music sales, licensing agreements, and upcoming projects. Legal documents filed in February and obtained by Reuters claim that while Jackson was over $400 million in debt at the time of his death, his estate has made more than $310 million in the years since. The estate’s administrators have used that money to pay off Jackson’s debt, as well as to care for the estate’s beneficiaries: Jackson’s children, his mother, and a variety of charities.
